Tonantzin is Nahuatl for "our mother" in reference to any maternal goddess. The Spanish conquistadores used the virgin Mary to forcefully convert indigenous Mexica peoples to Catholicism. The Mexica peoples had matriarchal societies and revered many goddess, which correlates to why La Virgen de Guadalupe is a highly revered figure in Mexico today.
